Most
developers are familiar with having to rebuild an Access
database to try and remove an elusive corruption. The
undocumented functions SaveAsText and LoadFromText
have been used to rebuild suspect databases for some
time.
This can also be done by creating a new MDB and
importing all the objects from the suspect database.
However, this does not always work and corruptions
persist
The SaveAsText and LoadFromText functions often fix
problems that just don't go away with the import method
mentioned above. The only problem with this is that you
had to write your own solution to use these functions.
Unless a great deal of time was spent on this, the
solution was generally not that easy to use and designed
to fix a particular problem.
The
Text Backup add-in takes away all the frustration
by providing a simple and easy to use interface for
multi-selecting objects across all types - queries,
forms, reports, macros and modules - for easy and quick
backup to text files. Even save your References and
Startup Options, and data.
Restoring those files is equally easy through a
simple multi-selection of objects from the storage
location for loading back into the current database.
This add-in will save you many hours of development
if you are considering building a solution of your own
using the SaveAsText and LoadFromText functions, and
many hours of frustrating bug chasing when objects can
easily be saved and restored in just a few simple steps.
The add-in is easily installed using the Access
Add-In Manager. Once installed it is quickly accessed
from the add-ins list.
Suitable Uses
Database Backup
You can easily create text copies of all your
database objects. Regularly saving all your objects to
text files ensures you have a recent version of the
object to restore to in case something goes wrong.
Distribution of Objects
If you regularly send objects to other developers or
co-workers, sending them as text is an excellent
solution. By using the Text Backup add-in you can
quickly select the relevant objects, back them up to
text files then attach the files to an email for
delivery.
Bug Resolution
When you have tried in vain to find that elusive bug,
save the offending object as text, delete it from your
database and then restore it back from the text file.
Very often this will fix the problem by rebuilding the
object completely.
