Overview
Santa's List is an Access database developed for
tracking the giving of gifts and greeting cards. It can be used
for personal use or by organisations in their client
relations activities. As a gift database or
greeting card database it greatly eases the managing of
such information.
Santa's List can record complete details of all your
contacts, clients, friends, family etc. You can also
give each contact a Santa's Rating - from 'Naughty',
'Not so Bad' to 'Nice', to assist with deciding who
should receive gifts and/or cards.
You can then run a report that lists contacts by
their rating, as a shopping list.
You can record all gifts and cards given, logging by
category and type. You can track costs if required to
help manage you gift giving budget.
Gifts and cards are given for specific events, that
are totally configurable by you. You are not limited to
Christmas giving, you can track gifts and cards for all
occasions.
If you enter birth dates for contacts and enable the
Birthday Check the system will tell you each time you
start what birthdays are coming up. You can then enter a
gift or card, or print out a report for those gift
hunting excursions.
There is a comprehensive set of reports, including
reports for summarising the gifts and cards you have
given in the past, for listing all those contacts yet to
receive a gift, listing birthdays and contacts
generally, and more.
Reports can be customised with filter forms that
allow you to decide what data is selected.
Santa's List can also be installed on a network for
multiple users.

number, contact details, phone, fax, email, actual and postal addresses
and much more.

A brilliant Find facility that allows you to search for any
contact on most fields, or combination of fields, in the database.

comprehensive set of pre-defined reports.

Reports include asset listing by event (e.g. Christmas 2003), periods, cost
listing and summary, outstanding gifts etc.

All
lookup lists, such as gift categories and gift types, can
be edited without limit, even while working with other records.
Most lists can have a default selection defined so when creating new
records, properties are automatically populated.

If you don't like the name 'Santa's List', give the database you
own title.

Important
Please make note that this Access application is
supplied as an MDE file and is thus NOT editable in
design mode. You cannot make design changes to objects
such as forms, reports etc. If required, we can provide
a service to customise the application to your needs. Do
not purchase this application if you intended to make
modifications yourself.

Installation
Installation is very simple. The file you download is
a self extracting ZIP file, hence its extension EXE
instead of ZIP. You don't need WinZip. Inside the file
are two installation files. You will need to run both
these to install the database components and then the
application.
I suggest you read these instructions first and then follow
the steps.

Extract the 2 files,
SantasListAppSetup.exe
and SantasListDataSetup.exe ,from
the self extracting file you downloaded, to a
temporary location of your choice. |
| WHY
2 INSTALL FILES? |
| Because the
product can be used by multiple users on a
network, it is common to install the data files
(e.g. SantasListData.mdb), the ones that
contain all your valuable data, only once on a
server which is accessible to all users. Hence
the separate install file SantasListDataSetup.exe.
You will always want to backup your data files.
As mentioned, they contain all your valuable
data.
Of course, if you are installing on a single
machine, then you can accept the default
location for the data files. Just remember to
always backup your data.
However, the interface file (SantasListApp.mde),
and other related files, should be installed on
each workstation and thus may require multiple
installations. The file SantasListAppSetup.exe
can be used to install the interface to multiple
workstations. |

Run the file SantasListDataSetup.exe and
follow the prompts to install the database
components. If you wish you can change the install
options for a multi-user environment, but for single
users we recommend you accept the defaults. |
| IMPORTANT |
| If
you change the default install location, for
example to put it on your server, make note of
where the file SantasListData.mdb is
installed. You will need this information in
step 6. |

Run the file SantasListAppSetup.exe and
follow the prompts to install the application. If
you wish you can change the install options but we
recommend you accept the defaults. |

To run Santa's
List, use either the shortcut
that has been added to you desktop, or the one in
the Asken > Santas List group in your Programs
area. |

You will need to log in to the database. Login in as USER, no password. |
| 6. |
For new installations and upgrades you will need
to register the product. A dialog will appear
requesting a Product Code. You can get a Product Key
easily online, or by email or fax. Enter your Product
Key to continue. |
| YOU
DON'T NEED THE PRODUCT KEY IMMEDIATELY |
| You don't need
the Product Key to complete the
installation. You have 5 uses before the Product
Key is absolutely required. During installation
you have the option to Register Later.
This is so people who have downloaded the sample
for evaluation can properly use the product, and
if you have purchased the product you are not
hindered in getting on with things. You can
worry about the Product Key later. |

The first time you run
Santa's List it will ask where
the data file SantasListData.mdb is.
This is the one installed in step 2 above. The
default location is C:\Program Files\Asken\Santas
List\Data\SantasListData.mdb. You need to locate
and select the file then click on the Open
button. The application will now connect to the data
file and you are done. |
